Amos Chapter 5

Lesson written by Brandon Vetter

Amos Chapter 5

1.  If Israel hasn’t been physically destroyed yet, why would Amos mourn the way he does in verse 2?

2. Why were Bethel, Gilgal, and Beersheba important to the Israelites?  Why would God tell them to not seek or go to these places?

3.  What recurring sins are mentioned in verses 7 and 10-12?  How does God return the favor to Israel in verse 11?

4.  Amos describes God again similarly to the end of chapter 4. What kind of God does he describe that will judge Israel here?

5.  What solution is presented to Israel that the people may live?

6.  Why would it be “prudent to keep quiet in such times?”

7.  Why do you think the people longed for the day of the Lord?  Instead, how certain and terrible will their judgment be in the day of the Lord?

8.  Why did God hate the things listed in verses 21-23?  If He were to speak to us directly today would He say these same things to us?

9.  Did Israel actually do what God asked in verse 25? What point do you think He is trying to make with verses 25-27?
